Women saved from suicide
A 23-year-old woman was rescued by an army jawan when she tried to commit suicide by jumping in front of a running train at Howrah station on Tuesday night. Abhishek Mishra, the jawan, was headed for Indore. But he cancelled the trip and stayed with the woman, a Chetla resident, in the waiting room. On Wednesday morning, he called police who took charge of the woman.
A 20-year-old woman tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Hooghly, near Sutanuti police outpost, around 10.15am on Wednesday morning. She was saved by a police patrol launch. The cop team took the Lake Town resident to Medical College and Hospital.
Laptops recovered
Eight laptops and as many cellphones stolen from homes in Salt Lake were recovered on Tuesday. Four alleged thieves, one of them a rickshaw-puller, were arrested. “Pratap Mondal, the rickshaw-puller, was the kingpin. He and his accomplices, Chinmoy Sutar, Ujjwal Das and Shyamsunder Biswas, would sell a stolen laptop for Rs 3,000-4,000,” said an officer.
Building collapse
Two pedestrians were injured when the first-floor balcony of a two-storeyed building on Keshab Chandra Sen Street, in central Calcutta, collapsed on Wednesday. An engineer in the civic building department said parts of the building had come up illegally.
Cop injured
Samar Das, a constable, was injured after he was hit by a motorcycle at the Padmapukur Road-Sarat Bose Road crossing around 2.20pm on Tuesday. He was taken to Calcutta Police Hospital with a fractured arm and bruises.
The motorcyclist was arrested and the vehicle impounded.
Blaze
A fire broke out in the electrical metre of a five-storeyed building on CIT Road, in Phoolbagan, around 1.45pm on Wednesday. Five tenders brought the blaze under control around 2.10pm. There were no casualties.
Road mishap
Three passengers were injured when the bus they were travelling on hit a tram at the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road-SN Banerjee Road crossing around 6.15am on Tuesday. The injured were taken to a nursing home. The rogue driver was arrested and the bus impounded.
