Dowry death slur

Balurghat, May 4: The relatives of a woman have lodged an FIR with Gangarampur police alleging that that she was murdered in a dowry related reprisal by her husband and in-laws.

The body of Farzuara Bibi (21) was found hanging from ceiling in her husband’s house yesterday.

The woman’s uncle, Moklesur Rehman, alleged that her husband, Habibur Rehman, and in-laws had been torturing Farzuara for dowry ever since the marriage three years ago.

According to the inspector-in-charge of the Gangarampur police station, Biswanath Haldar, both Farzuara and Habibur belonged to agriculture families.

“Sometimes Farzuara would leave her husband after being tortured and beaten up and come to our house,” said Moklesur.

He regretted that his family had always coaxed her into returning to her husband’s house.

After the death of her father, Farzuara was being taken care of by Moklesur.

“We are certain that she was strangled and then the body strung up to make it look like a suicide,” Moklesur said.

The Aligram villagers said Habibur and other members of the family had fled after Farzuara’s death.
