Guwahati, May 4: Pune FC finally got the taste of victory in the last match of the second division ONGC I-league by defeating minnows Indian Bank 2-0 at Nehru Stadium here today.
The Pune outfit had earlier lost all its previous four matches. Today, however, it cruised past its Chennai opponents netting two goals in the first half. With the win today, Pune FC were awarded three points while the bankmen ended their campaign at the bottom of the points tally without a win.
In today’s match, Pune FC started on a dominating note right from the word go and K. Rahul drew first blood in the 11th minute by heading in a well-placed spot kick by foreign recruit Sylvester Inyang.
Substitute Abhishek Yadav, who replaced F. Lal Rozama following an injury to the latter, further consolidated the lead by pushing in a pass from Bounougou Edoa in the 28th minute. The bankmen got the first opportunity to level the score in the 23rd minute but it was squandered by S. Parthiban who pushed the ball wide away from the unguarded net from inside the goalbox.
They got several more opportunities to score in the second half but poor performance of their forwards M. Ramesh and S. Santha Kumar cost the team as they failed to convert the chances into goals.
Mumbai FC topped the tally with 13 points after defeating Chirag United by a solitary goal in their last outing on Saturday. Felix Aboagye fashioned the Mumbaikars’ victory by making no mistake in converting a 14th-minute penalty kick. Apart from Mumbai FC, Md. Sporting, Chirag United and Vasco SC have qualified for the next edition of the first division I-league. Pune FC and Indian Bank will continue to play in the second division league next season. However, if any team from amongst the top quartet pulls out next season, Pune FC will qualify for the first division I-league. |
