Clash with cops after mishap

Three policemen were injured in a clash with residents of Mandalpara in Behala on Sunday. Officers of Behala police station went to Mandalpara after a truck carrying sugar overturned on Diamond Harbour Road. The residents accused the police of not maintaining vigil on the road. The altercation turned into a clash. Over 200 residents allegedly threw stones at the policemen, who resorted to a lathicharge. Fifteen of them were arrested.

Special trains

Eastern and South Eastern railways are running several pairs of weekly special trains this summer. South Eastern Railway will run eight pairs of summer specials to Mysore from May 9 to June 20. Eastern Railway will run special trains between Howrah and New Jalpaiguri and Howrah and Delhi from May 3 to June 15.

Body found

The body of Sujit Thakur, 35, was found in a field in Malapara, Dasnagar, on Sunday morning. He was shot in the chest and his throat was slit. Police said Sujit sold country liquor and narcotics for a living.

Girl drowns

Chandni Das, 13, drowned while taking a dip in the Hooghly on Sunday. The girl, a resident of Baranagar, went to the river with her younger sister and mother around 12.30pm.

LPG burst

Chandan Das, a 32-year-old resident of Golghar in Barrackpore, sustained burns when an LPG cylinder exploded in his kitchen on Sunday. The fire spread to other parts of the house. The flames were doused in three hours.
