One person died and four were injured in accidents across the city on Sunday.
Bharat Lal, 36, died after the Maruti Esteem he was driving rammed into a sand-laden truck coming from the opposite direction on Majherhat flyover around 3am.
Lal, a bank employee, was trapped under the truck. “The Alipore resident, injured in the head, was found unconscious. He was taken to SSKM Hospital where he died,” said an officer of Alipore police station. The truck driver fled leaving behind his vehicle.
On BT Road, three constables were checking the documents of a city-bound Sumo around 1.30am when a speeding truck hit the car from behind.
“Both vehicles sped away when the officers rushed to help the injured constables,” said Vineet Goyal, the deputy commissioner of police, headquarters. They were admitted to a private hospital on EM Bypass.
Traffic sergeant Gautam Sengupta, of Ultadanga traffic guard, was injured when a CTC bus dashed the two-wheeler he was riding at the Ultadanga crossing around 11.30am.
Sengupta was headed for Kankurgachhi and the bus was taking a turn towards EM Bypass, police said.
Sengupta was admitted to a private hospital. The driver has been booked and the vehicle impounded.
In the fourth accident, a Safari caught fire after it collided with a taxi on the Sealdah flyover, near the Mahatma Gandhi Road crossing, around 1am.
The Safari was coming from Rajabazar. A tender was called to douse the fire.
Utpal Das, who was travelling in the taxi, suffered minor injuries and was released after first-aid.
The drivers escaped but the vehicles have been impounded.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle caught fire because of a gas leak from the air-conditioning machine in the Safari. Later, the vehicle’s fuel-tank exploded.
