Santiniketan girl hangs herself

Santiniketan, May 4: A Visva-Bharati student was found hanging in her rented room this evening.

Swagata Bagchi, 21, a third-year economics student, had moved to the house in Abanpalli three-and-a-half months ago from the university’s Sevapalli Hostel, which is being renovated.

There was no suicide note and police are clueless about what drove Swagata to death.

Her landlord, Aniruddha Dey, said he hadn’t seen Swagata since morning and decided to check on her around 6pm. When his knocks went unanswered, he called Bolpur police station.

“Our officers peeped in through a window and saw the girl hanging from a ceiling fan hook, a dupatta tied round her neck,” inspector in-charge Kamal Bairagya said. “The body has been sent for post-mortem.”

The police have informed Swagata’s father Samir Bagchi, who lives in Behrampore.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Swagata was last seen pacing outside her room around 10 last night by some students who live in the neighbourhood.

Sukanta Patra, a BA first-year student of Bolpur College, had asked her if anything was bothering her. She had said she was disturbed, but did not elaborate.
