Close shave on Metro tracks

A 46-year-old man who fainted and fell on the Metro Railway tracks at Sovabazar station on Wednesday morning was saved when the driver of the train entering the platform managed to stop it in time. The man, who lives in Masjidbari Street in north Calcutta, was waiting to catch a Dum Dum-bound train. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College.

Radar repairs

The primary and secondary radar at the city airport were shut down from 10am to 2.30pm on Wednesday for repairs. Flights were monitored manually during that period. “There were no significant delays. After 2.30pm, the repairs continued on the radar antennae but that did not hinder operations,” said an airport official.

Rizwanur case

Justice Dipankar Dutta of the high court on Wednesday asked the counsel of the parties in the Rizwanur Rahman case, including advocate-general Balai Ray, to be present in court on May 12, the date of the next hearing. The high court will decide whether it will allow the CBI to proceed with the investigation into the death of Rizwanur and start criminal proceedings against the accused.

Road mishaps

B. Purnima, 30, was hit by an unidentified two-wheeler at the crossing of Hyde Road and Circular Garden Reach Road on Wednesday morning. She was taken to BNR Hospital. In another mishap, a minibus hit 54-year-old cyclist R.S. Ram in Garden Reach. Ram, an assistant sub-inspector of the CISF, was rushed to a hospital in Taratala. The bus driver was caught and the vehicle impounded.

Escape bid

Jogesh Sharma, 26, an undertrial, tried to flee from at Howrah District Hospital on Wednesday. He was taken to the hospital for a test. Sharma had been arrested by Golabari police for repeatedly failing to appear in court. Immediately after the police jeep stopped near the emergency gate of the hospital, Sharma jumped off the vehicle and started running. The police officers chased him down.

Student suicide

Rina Juin, a student of Class IX, committed suicide by taking poison in her home in Baruipur on Tuesday night. Police said Rina was depressed after failing to clear her annual examination.

Burrabazar fire

A fire broke out in the office of an iron ore export company in Burrabazar on Wednesday afternoon. Two fire tenders doused the blaze in a couple of hours. Fire fighters claimed a short circuit in an air-conditioner sparked the flames. No one was injured.

Found hanging

Anil Halder, 36, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his Sonarpur home on Wednesday morning. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said Halder was going through a financial crisis.

Classical music

Classical music exponent Deepali Nag will speak on the evolution of Indian classical music at Bharat Sabha Hall on Friday. The talk will be followed by the screening of Classical Music Through Philately, a documentary by Sushanta Bhusan Bhattacharya, a former post master general of West Bengal.

Bangla national

Sheikh Musibam, a 16-year-old Bangladeshi national, was arrested in East Jadavpur on Wednesday. Residents of the area had detained him after finding him loitering in the neighbourhood. Police said Sheikh had initially claimed that he was a resident of the area but later confessed that he had crossed the border illegally to meet acquaintances in the city.
