Sting heat to singe state sports bodies
- IHF muddle fallout: JOA to be responsible for all organisations affiliated to it

Ranchi, April 29: The ripples of the sting operation, which led to the suspension of Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), will make life difficult for the state associations of different games.

The Indian Olympic Association executive council, which met last evening in Delhi, has issued strict directives to the Jharkhand Olympic Association (JOA) and other state Olympic associations to keep tabs on the activities of all the sports bodies affiliated to it.

According to the fresh directive of the Indian Olympic Association, JOA will be responsible to it for all the activities of the state-level associations in Jharkhand. Thirty-three sports bodies are affiliated to JOA.

The fresh directive implies that the JOA officials will have to keep a tab on the activities of all its affiliated units, the JOA secretary-general, S.M. Hashmi, who attended the Indian Olympic Association executive council meeting, told The Telegraph.

“Though this has been a part of the Indian Olympic Association charter, it was not being taken seriously. But the Indian Olympic Association executive council has now decided to implement it strictly,” Hashmi said.

“The JOA will now have to send audited accounts of its affiliated state associations, a report on their activities and minutes of the meetings convened by the associations,” he added.

The steps initiated by the Indian Olympic Association would effect more such state-level associations which have a handful of members and do not have regular activities but get funds from the state government and other sources for organising camps and competitions, pointed out a JOA office-bearer.

Incidentally, the sting operation that exposed the IHF secretary-general accepting bribe for selecting a player forced Indian Olympic Association to convene an emergency meeting of its executive council for the first time in the past 26 years, Hashmi said.

Hashmi had argued in the meeting that as the president of IHF K.P.S. Gill should have accepted the responsibility of the action of his secretary-general and resigned from the post.
