Court gets Todis’ letters to top cop

CBI on Tuesday produced in the high court letters that Pradip Todi, Ashok Todi and two of their relatives had written to former city police chief Prasun Mukherjee between September 1 and September 14 last year. The Todis had allegedly sought Mukherjee’s help to separate Priyanka from Rizwanur Rahman. Justice Dipankar Dutta, who is hearing the Rizwanur death case, had asked the CBI to produce the documents. wo private news channels, on the basis of another order of the court, submitted the cassettes on Mukherjee’s press conference on September 26 last year. The hearing will continue on Wednesday.

Stolen items

Police on Tuesday asked the owners of cash and jewellery recovered on Saturday night to contact Jadavpur police station. The haul was worth Rs 38 lakh. “After the identification process, the court will be approached on May 12 to allow the owners to take back their items,” said Praveen Kumar, the district superintendent of police, South 24-Parganas. A search is on for Kabutari and Popi, the eunuchs who used to supply information to the gang members.

Unconscious

Narayan Halder, 35, fell unconscious at the Rashbehari Avenue crossing on Tuesday afternoon. Traffic sergeant G. Mondal took the New Barrackpore resident to SSKM Hospital, where doctors said he might have suffered a heat stroke.

Knocked down

Gopal Panda, 31, was injured after a Maruti car knocked him down at the crossing of Durgacharan Street and Strand Bank Road, in the North Port police station area, on Monday night. He was admitted to Medical College and Hospital with head and leg injuries. The driver was arrested and the vehicle impounded.

Robbery

A gang robbed cash and jewellery from a house in Topsia Second Lane, in Tiljala, on Tuesday noon. The house owner was away. The burglars entered the house by breaking open the rear door. The neighbours informed police after seeing the door broken.

Flight cancelled

Air India’s Calcutta-London flight was cancelled on Tuesday due to shortage of pilots, airport sources said. The flight and duty-time limitations of most pilots of Air India were exhausted, causing the shortage. The passengers were rebooked on flights to London via Mumbai and Delhi.

Sandwiches

Subway, the world’s largest submarine sandwich chain with more than 29,000 restaurants in 86 countries, launched its fourth outlet in Calcutta recently. The new outlet is located in Dalhousie Square, behind the high court.

Airport fire

A small fire broke out in the international cargo complex of Calcutta airport around 11.30pm on Monday. Officials said a short-circuit caused the blaze. Two tenders put off the fire in less than half an hour.

Ransacked

Residents of Howrah’s Aprakash Mukherjee Lane ransacked the houses of Prasun Adhikari and brother-in-law Gopi Garai, alleging that the duo had plotted the murder of 23-year-old Saurav Das. The youth was found dead near a building under construction in the locality. Prasun and Gopi, arrested on Monday night, allegedly admitted to killing Das. The situation was brought under control after police reached the spot.

Club clash

A clash broke out between members of two clubs in Bosepukur, Kasba, on Tuesday. One of the clubs was destroyed allegedly by members of the other club on Monday night, triggering the clash. A police picket has been posted in the area.

Stove burst

Ruksana Khatoon, 22, was killed when a kerosene stove burst at her Alipore home on Monday night. She was taken to SSKM Hospital, where she died. Police said there was no foul play.
