Denied cellphone, son stabs father

A 22-year-old man allegedly tried to stab his father on Bentinck Street on Sunday. Bittu Raut, a security guard in a highrise, had demanded Rs 10,000 from his father Ajobi, 55, for buying a mobile phone, said police. Bittu fled after stabbing his father in the abdomen. A preliminary investigation revealed that Bittu was being treated for mental ailments.

Truck mows down man

Haradhan Debnath, 35, was killed when a truck dashed him near Alipore zoo on Monday morning. Debnath, a resident of Rajapur village in Burdwan, was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver and his help were arrested.

Body found

The body of Saurav Das, 23, was found near a building under construction in Aprakash Mukherjee Lane under Shibpur police station on Monday morning. There was deep cut on his throat. Police said Das had been drinking in the building with one or more people. Prasanta Gharui and Gopia have been detained.

Labourer falls

Sheikh Abdul Salim, a daily labourer from Burdwan, was seriously injured after falling off the second floor of a building in Topsia on Monday. Salim was admitted to National Medical College and Hospital.

Flight cancelled

Air India’s Calcutta-Kathmandu flight was cancelled on Monday because of operational problems. The flight was to take off from the city at 1.50pm. The aircraft comes from Agartala before flying to Kathmandu. It was grounded in Agartala. A special flight will leave for Kathmandu on Tuesday with the stranded passengers, said an airline official.

Boy held for rape

A 15-year-old boy was arrested at Mahestala on Monday for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl. Police said the incident happened on Monday morning when the girl was alone in her room. The boy was arrested on the basis of a complaint by the girl’s father.

Nandaram

Nandaram Market Tenants’ and Traders’ Welfare Association moved a petition before the high court on Monday seeking an order that restrains the Calcutta Municipal Corporation from demolishing the market building without testing its stability by a group of experts.

Train services

Train services on the Sealdah south section of Eastern Railway was disrupted for nearly an hour on Monday morning after residents of Baisnabghata blocked the tracks demanding immediate repairs to the Baghajatin flyover.
