Cellphone theft racket busted

The alleged kingpin of a cellphone theft racket was arrested near New Market on Sunday. Several handsets were found on him. Mohammad Alam was held on the basis of a complaint by Soumen Dhar, who said his cellphone was stolen when he was shopping in the market on Saturday morning.

2 injured in airport fire

Two men suffered burns when a frying pan caught fire in the staff kitchen of the Hindustan Petroleum depot at the airport on Sunday morning. Bablu, a cook, and Shivaji Hadkar, a security guard, were discharged after treatment.

Blaze

Cooking gas leak led to a fire at Sreeram Garden, a ceremony house at Teghoria on VIP Road, on Sunday morning. Two fire tenders brought the blaze under control in half an hour.

Fatal fall

Harjinder Singh, 28, fell off the fourth-floor terrace of his house on Biplabi Anukul Chandra Street, in Bowbazar, early on Sunday. He was taken to Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police said he was drinking on the terrace.

Blockade

Nearly 150 residents of Baksara, Batore and Nabanaritala blocked Kona Expressway at Batore More for six hours from 11am on Sunday to protest frequent power cuts. Vehicle movement was disrupted on the Expressway, NH 6 and Vivekananda Setu.

Diarrhoea

The civic water supply department is checking the pipes under DL Khan Road for leaks after several diarrhoea cases have been detected in slums in the area since Friday. Chief engineer (water supply) Bibhash Maity said water from the area has been sent for tests. The results will be available on Monday.

Rally snarls

A DYFI rally in support of the Left Front before the panchayat elections caused traffic snarls across the city on Sunday afternoon. The rally started at Shyambazar.
