Swedish big guns on Bengal recce

Calcutta, April 27: Heads of 10 Swedish companies, including multibillion-dollar enterprises like ABB, Volvo, Ericsson, Ikea, Sandvik and Securitas, will meet Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at Writers’ Buildings tomorrow.

Ericsson, a $27.9-billion company that is the world’s largest provider of technology and services to telecom companies, is set to open its Calcutta office tomorrow.

The Swedish team will attend the opening of the Ericsson office.

The others in the delegation include Svenska Handelsbanken, one of the largest banks in the Nordic countries, SKF, a global supplier of roller bearings, seals and lubrication systems, Delaval, which is involved in food processing and specialises in dairy equipment, and IFS Solutions, an IT solutions provider.

Most of these companies have operations in other Indian cities and together pack in billions of dollars worth of investment across the globe.

The Swedish representatives will meet commerce and industries minister Nirupam Sen first and then the chief minister. The aim of the talks will be to explore possible areas of investment and collaboration in the state.

Auto giant Volvo’s visit comes after industries department officials’ meetings with companies like BMW and Daimler AG during their recent trip to Germany.

Volvo, the world’s leading manufacturer of trucks and buses, has a factory in Hoskote near Bangalore. It has a regional sales office in Calcutta and a services and spares centre in Howrah.

Sandvik is a renowned tooling and mining equipment company. Its interest in Bengal comes at a time the state is trying to revive its castings, forgings and tooling industry.

Ikea, the world’s largest furniture maker, became famous for its ready-to-assemble, utilitarian furniture and home accessories while Securitas is the world leader in security solutions.

ABB is one of the largest power and automation technology companies operating in more than 100 countries.

The Swedish ambassador to India and the Swedish consul in Calcutta will accompany the delegation.
