Jaigaon, April 25: A raging bull has gored one person to death and injured several others in Looksan, a sleepy settlement tucked away in the Dooars.
Foresters have said they cannot do anything because the animal is domesticated and not wild.
Ratna Bahadur Thapa, 60, was head-butted by the bull on April 10 while he was walking down NH31C along the Diana forest in Nagrakata. Thapa died of his injuries on April 16, said the Looksan gram pamchayat pradhan, Prafulla Haldar.
Another person, Santosh Barua, was chased and injured by the bull on April 4. The 50-year-old electrician is now in hospital.
Mohammad Shamsad Ali narrowly escaped a similar fate. “I was riding my motorcycle on the highway when suddenly the bull charged at me and I somehow managed to flee,” he said.
The animal’s latest victim is Gautam Biswas, 42. He was attacked yesterday and sustained serious injuries on his spine, hands and head. “We took him to a primary health centre and then to a private nursing home in Jalpaiguri,” said his brother, Shankar.
Residents said around 25 days ago someone had left the bull in the Diana forest at night. “The bull usually attacks people in the afternoon,” said on of them.
Diana range officer Sudip Kumar Das said: “It is a domesticated animal, so we cannot tranquillise it.”
Nagrakata livestock development officer Sanat Pratihar said he had told his superiors about the “rampant bull”.
