Ranchi, April 25: With numerous complaints from students on the poor quality of answer sheets, Ranchi University (RU) has constituted a high-level inquiry team to probe into the matter.
The answer sheets are printed at a Calcutta-based printing press.
Students, evaluators and superintendents at various examination centres have said that answer sheets are of such poor quality that it tears when students write on them. Evaluators complained that they are unable to carry out the work properly, as they have to handle the sheets with utmost care.
RU spokesperson S.S. Akhtar said the inquiry team would submit its report after conducting a probe in the next 15 days. The three-member inquiry team comprises dean (faculty of commerce) S.N.L. Das as its chairman, dean (students’ welfare) C.S.P. Lugun and principal of city-based Doranda College, Ram Pravesh.
However, considering the past record of “poor administration” at Ranchi University, sources termed the inquiry order as nothing but an “eyewash”.
“The inquiry team comprises the not-so-dynamic officers. Why is the name of the examination controller or any other senior official not included when the matter is so serious and pertains to the examination?” points out an examination department source confirming that poor quality of answer sheets .
Fingers were raised against the officials concerned with the purchase of these sheets and a possible deal between the printer and RU officials was also not denied.
Purchase of answer sheets by the university has become a closed-door affair of late. A purchase committee headed by vice-chancellor A.A. Khan, deputy registrar Pritam Kumar and RU finance officer, among others, are involved in the purchase of answer sheets, question papers, certificates and other related material.
“The name of the printing press where question papers get printed should be kept confidential. There is no reason why the process of purchase of lakhs of answer sheets and certificates are kept secret. We do not know how much money is being spent under these heads,” said a senior RU official requesting anonymity.
Sources said over 10 lakh answer sheets are published at the Calcutta-based printing press every year. They were concerned about keeping the name of the press confidential as a lot of public money was involved in the process.
Ranchi University Students’ Union (RUSU) secretary Srimanta Mahto has asked RU authorities to enquire under what circumstances were the answer sheets purchased and who is benefited at the end.
It was during a recent Part-III degree examination that the inferior quality of answer sheets came to the fore. Several complaints have been registered after that.
