Boy run over on VIP Road
A nine-year-old boy died after being run over by a car on VIP Road, near Kaikhali, on Friday afternoon. Sheikh Vicky, a resident of Mandalganthi, was hit while he and some of his friends were throwing stones at a dog. Residents blocked the road for 15 minutes.
Child traced
A three-year-old child who went missing from Gariahat on Friday morning was traced to Howrah in the afternoon. Mohammed Meraj’s father went shopping leaving the child at a relative’s shop in Gariahat around 10am. When he returned half an hour later the boy could not be found. A diary was lodged with Gariahat police station. Police said Meraj had walked to the other side of the road. A woman saw him crying and took him to Shibpur police station.
Mishap
An unidentified motorcyclist, aged around 25, was found lying unconscious on AJC Bose Road early on Friday. He was rushed to SSKM Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Police said the youth was knocked down by a vehicle.
Airport bag
A passenger left behind a bag with cash and travellers’ cheques worth $5,000 at the airport’s immigration counter on Friday morning and boarded the Jet Airways flight to Dhaka. The owner of the bag was informed.
Award
Calcutta University on Friday presented an award named after former vice-chancellor Debaprasad Sarvadhikary to agriculture scientist M.S. Swaminathan. University registrar Samir Bandyopadhyay and pro vice-chancellor Suranjan Das presented the award to Swaminathan at a programme in Salt Lake.
Courses
NSHM Knowledge Campus, Calcutta, has tied up with Adobe and Autodesk for an 18-month postgraduate programme in visual designing and communication management and a two-year postgraduate programme in animation and visual effects each. The courses will start in July.
Injured
Leena Mukherjee, 26, sustained critical injuries after the motorcycle she was riding pillion on collided with a truck near the Vidyasagar Setu toll plaza on Thursday night. She was rushed to Woodlands clinic, where her condition was critical. Motorcyclist Gopal Bhar Chowdhury, 28, and truck driver Mohammad Yasin, 28, sustained minor injuries.
Trafficker
CID official arrested trafficker Sheikh Alamgir near the airport on Friday morning following a tip-off. Alamgir was accompanied by a minor girl.
