Guwahati, April 23: Mumbai Football Club registered their second straight win in the final leg of the ONGC second division I-league Football Tournament today, edging past Pune FC by a solitary goal in a keenly contested encounter at Nehru Stadium.
Foreign recruit Felix Aboagye scored the all-important goal for the Mumbaikars in the 17th minute. His header off a spot kick from the right flank by skipper Noel Wilson caught Pune FC custodian Baiaji Narasimhan offguard to enter into the second post.
The Mumbai team began the game on an attacking note and got their first opportunity as early as in the fourth minute. Medio Kutty Mani, however, squandered the opportunity, failing to beat the opponent custodian in a one-to-one inside the goalbox.
Narasimhan drew the crowd’s applause after making some laborious saves in the fist half. He made a spectacular save in the 27th minute, fisting a shot by Aboagye off a Michael Osei pass above the crosspiece.
The Pune club was reduced to a 10-man side midway into the match with referee M.A. Siddique giving the marching orders — the first in the tournament — to stopper K. Rahul for pulling Aboagye down from behind, barely a yard away from the penalty area, in the 43rd minute.
Despite being reduced to 10, the Pune outfit kept the Mumbaikars at bay throughout the second half.
With nothing to lose after having gone down to Chirag United in their first outing on Sunday, the Pune men went on the offensive in the second session, making frequent forays into the opponent’s territory. They, however, could hardly break through the strong Mumbai FC defence.
The only time they came close to scoring — in the second minute of the second half — off a flag kick by E. Mahendra Mani, was, however, squandered by James Effiong who headed it wide away from the woodwork.
Mumbai FC lost a similar opportunity in the 70th minute. Vasco FC, Goa, will play Calcutta club Chirag United in tomorrow’s match.
