Hiss story & myth

The spectacled cobra is one of India’s most commonly found and famous snakes. Extending to a length between 1.2m and 1.5m, the spectacled cobra is one of the ‘big four’ venomous snakes to be found in the country, but is quite hassle-free to deal with.

It is relatively easy to handle because of its innately non-aggressive nature. In fact, the whole idea of the snake flaring its signature hood is to warn its enemies to stay away.

The stretched skin of the hood is held open by the elongated ribs. This action serves to make the snake look larger than its actual size.

When a cobra makes a few mock strikes and loud hissing noises, the most violent of predators (or trouble-making humans) are scared to approach it.

However, contrary to the fact, most people think otherwise, and remain mired in the belief that the cobra always opens up its hood and sways in response to the snake charmer’s music.
