Rivals clash before polls

Jaigaon/Raiganj, April 22: Eleven people, including three policemen, were injured in clashes over campaigning for the rural polls in North Dinajpur and Jalpaiguri districts in the past two days.

CPM supporters set up a road blockade at Jalpaiguri’s Pesimola village at 9am today, alleging that Congress members had assaulted some of them at a meeting last night.

While the blockade was on, a group of Congress supporters allegedly set upon the CPM, injuring five of its members. In the ensuing clash, which the police tried to stop, three constables were injured. Of the five injured CPM supporters, three were taken to the subdivisional hospital. The police said no one has been arrested yet.

In North Dinajpur, three CPM members were injured in an attack allegedly carried out by Congress supporters at Alengia, 12km from Raiganj, on Sunday night. Eight houses were torched. The members of the Left party were returning from an election campaign.

Yesterday, 15 people from both the parties were arrested in this connection.

CPM’s Raiganj zonal committee secretary Omshed Ali Sarkar said: “The police raided the house of Samsur Ali, our party member, and manhandled his wife and daughter in his absence.”

Deputy superintendent of police in Raiganj Sisir Das denied the charge.
