Cops to fan out for killer clues

A team of officers from the detective department will go to Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand to find out details about Kalipada Das, who had killed Akhanda Mandali head Samhita Devi. Das was beaten to death by the inmates of Gurudham temple, run by the Mandali, after he stabbed Samhita and another monk. Officers said they had contacted a few relatives of Das but they had no clue about his recent activities.

Strike by truckers

Loading and unloading of goods at the Shalimar railway yard has stopped as the Howrah District Shalimar Lorry and Tempo Association launched an “indefinite strike” on Tuesday morning. The association wants drivers, cleaners and labourers at the yard be allowed to take rest for four hours at night and that the late fine be reduced from Rs 24,000 an hour to Rs 4,000. Around 1,200 trucks and tempos load and unload goods at the yard. Nearly 4,000 drivers and cleaners and 1,400 labourers are involved in the process. Birendra Singh, the general secretary of the association, said the demands were in tune with a circular issued by the railways.

Knocked down

A state bus (WB04 C9957) knocked down Susanta Niyogi, 35, at the crossing of Dilkhusha Street and Jhowtola Road, in the Karaya police station area, around 9.40am on Tuesday. The Muraripukur Road resident was admitted to National Medical College and Hospital, where he died. The driver fled but the vehicle was impounded.

Mishap

A youth aged 25 years died after being dashed by an unidentified vehicle on Chakraberia Road around 4.30am on Tuesday. He was taken to SSKM Hospital where he died. A case of unnatural death has been registered and search is on for the driver and the vehicle.

Collision

Raj Kumar Roy, 25, was injured when the truck he was driving collided with a tanker on APC Road around 2am on Tuesday. The driver of the tanker, Shyam Bahadur Yadav, 25, and his help, J.C. Yadav, 27, were also injured. All three were taken to RG Kar Hospital. The vehicles were impounded.

Suicide

Paritosh Ghughu, 30, committed suicide by consuming poison in his house in Budge Budge, on the southern fringes of the city, on Tuesday. Police said Paritosh, a dance teacher, had been suffering from depression. He was found lying on the floor, frothing at the mouth, and was taken to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Theft arrest

Akhtar Seikh, a middle-aged man from Howrah, was arrested in Akra Phatak, Metiabruz, on Tuesday for allegedly stealing a motorcycle. Police said Akhtar was active in Calcutta, Howrah, and North and South 24-Parganas.

Green award

The state pollution control board and the Indian Chamber of Commerce distributed the environment excellence awards for 2007 to the industrial units, NGOs and service sector units on Tuesday. Environment minister Sailen Sarkar handed over the awards to the organisations and stressed the need for industrial units to follow green norms.
