Unnatural death nets husband
Tripti Karmakar, a 24-year-old housewife, died an unnatural death in Kasba on Sunday. Husband Palash and brother-in-law Partha were arrested on Monday for their alleged involvement in the death. Police are also looking for a relative of the Karmakars.
Tripti was mentally and physically tortured by her husband and in-laws for dowry,” said brother Rajiv, who has lodged a police complaint. The in-laws run two jewellery shops in south Calcutta.
he police said some neighbours saw Palash and Partha leaving with an unconscious Tripti in a taxi. They went to a private hospital in Dhakuria, where Tripti was declared dead.
Accident kills cop
Uttam Kumar Das, an assistant sub-inspector of police, was killed in an accident in Behala early on Monday. Police said Das, 42, was dashed by a vehicle near Chowrasta while he was returning home from duty on his two-wheeler. He was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital, where he died. Das was attached to Alipore police station. A search is on for the vehicle and the driver.
Knocked down
A 35-year-old youth was knocked down by a motorist on VIP Road, in Narayantala, on Monday evening. Police said the motorcyclist was travelling towards Baguiati. The youth was admitted to a local nursing home.
Murder remand
The Howrah chief judicial magistrate on Monday remanded Sunil Shaw, 37, accused of murdering younger brother Rajesh, in police custody for seven days. Rajesh’s body was found in an underground reservoir, on Bally’s Jaibibi Road, on March 29.
Power cut
Power went off at Medical College and Hospital on Monday afternoon, while three surgeries were being performed in the cardio-thoracic department. There was no major problem as the operating theatres had back-up supply. Hospital officials said the supply was disrupted from 1.15pm to 1.30pm.
Hospital tie-up
Mission of Mercy Hospital, Calcutta, and Christian Medical College, Vellore, have signed an MoU to conduct distance education programmes for doctors with basic medicine degrees. On completion of the degree, the doctors will be provided postgraduate diploma in family medicine by the Vellore institute.
.K. Jana, the associate director of CMC Vellore, said the two-year programme would enable general practitioners to manage more cases so that referral becomes less necessary. Teachers from CMC Vellore would provide training to 25 doctors from Bengal and Jharkhand for a period of 10 days.
