Yoga spreads wings abroad
- Neighbours share honours in championship

Jamshedpur, April 20: Displaying a brilliant performance at the Michael John auditorium here today, Abhishek Sharma became the champion of champions in the 4th India Open Yoga Championship. Olivia Lee of Macaw pocketed the runners-up award.

Besides Lee, other participants from abroad also showcased superb yoga skills in the championship. Ellen Leuing of China went on to bag the second runners-up award.

Tania Paul was adjudged the Little Miss Yoga. The Little Master Yoga award went to Subham Kumar Rajak on the concluding day of the event.

The best disciplined outstation unit award was claimed by Burdwan while the best local disciplined unit prize was given to JH Tarapore of Agrico. The Dayanand Public School went home with the best-dressed unit award in the competition.

There was a keen tussle between Jharkhand and Bengal Yoga enthusiasts as they fought with each other to bag the top slots. In the Group C (between 12 and 18 years) category, Tanay Dutta of the state clinched the first place surpassing the performance of Manik Dey of Bengal.

In the same category for girls, P. Amruta of Jharkhand clinched the number-one spot, followed by Taniya Sen of Bengal.

Jharkhand yoga enthusiasts reigned supreme in the Group D (between 18 and 30 years) section as well. Umesh Kumar, Abhishek Sharma and Praveen Kumar, all from Jharkhand, bagged the first, second and third place, respectively. Bengal girl Saptadipa Dey secured the first place in the same category for girls.

There was no dearth in enthusiasm among the elders at the yoga championship. Raghunath Yadav (87 years) was given the most senior participant’s award as he bowled everyone present with his perfect asanas.

In the veterans’ (above 30 years) category, Bengal’s yoga enthusiast Koushik Das claimed the top slot defeating S.R.K. Chowdhary of Jharkhand. It was Olivia Lee of Hong Kong who became the winner in the same category for women.

Around 500 participants from 15 states, including Jharkhand, took part in the championship organised by Tata Steel and Karmakar Insti- tute of Yoga. The championship was organised in 10 different groups for both boys and girls.
