Coal chunk kills jute mill worker
A 50-year-old jute mill worker, Sakaldip Sau, died on Friday after a chunk of coal hit him on the head at Jaychandipur, in Budge Budge, on the southern fringes of the city. Police said the mishap occurred on Thursday night while Sau was returning home along the railway yard. Some coal thieves were being chased by the mill’s security guards. One of the guards threw a piece of coal at one of the thieves, which hit Sau on the back of his head. He was taken to a local hospital and then shifted to SSKM Hospital, where he died.
Minor molest tag on tutor
Police are looking for a 17-year old boy of Badamtala, in Regent Park, for allegedly molesting a minor girl. The girl’s parents have said the boy was her private tutor.
Fatal fall
Swati Deb Roy, 60, died after falling from the third floor of a highrise at Kamalgazi, on the southern city fringes, on Friday evening. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Police are investigating if there was any foul play behind her death.
CU exam dates
The BA, B.Sc and B.Com Part III honours exams of Paper VII of Calcutta University, scheduled to be held on April 23, will be held on April 24. The BA, B.Sc and B.Com Part III exams of Paper VIII, slated for April 25, will be held on April 26, officials of the university’s examination department said on Friday. The exams scheduled for April 21 will be held on April 22, because of the bandh called by the Trinamul Congress and SUCI.
Boys drown
Two boys drowned in a pond at Rabindranagar, on the southern fringes of the city, on Friday evening. Police said Pathik Das, 15, and Aniket Sau, 13, were taking a swim after a game of football. The bodies were fished out by divers of Calcutta Port Trust.
Birth anniversary
The 200th birth anniversary of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was observed at Town Hall on Friday by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation.
