1 dies, 24 injured in mishaps

Balurghat, April 17: One person was killed and 24 others were injured in two road accidents in South Dinajpur district today.

Sakhen Sarkar (20) died on the spot and 19 passengers were injured when the minibus they were travelling in turned turtle at Pransagar in Gangarampur.

Five persons were injured when an autorickshaw overturned on Monipur Main Road here while trying to overtake a bus. All the injured have been hospitalised.


College move

Jalpaiguri: The principal of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College has ordered a fourth-year mechanical engineering student to vacate the hostel. The student is allegedly one of those who had asked for a matchbox from a teacher to light a cigarette on the Bengali New Year’s Day. The teachers have been on an indefinite strike since then.


Forest force

Alipurduar: The Cooch Behar forest division has formed a joint forestry management force with the help of two forest protection committees (FPCs) to stop felling of trees. Ashim Chaki, the range officer of Madarihat, has involved the Pashchim Shalkumar FPC in South Khayerbari beat and the Islamabad FPC in North Khayerbari beat to form the force. There are 24 men and 15 women in the group.


Boy killed

Islampur: The body of an unidentified boy was found at Bhaishvita Tea Garden in Chopra on Thursday. Police suspect that the boy might have been strangled to death at some other place.
