Wonder surgery

Bangalore, April 17 (PTI): An open-heart surgery was successfully performed here on a baby weighing 900gm at birth, doctors have said. He suffered from a fungal mass in the right chamber of the heart.

A team of surgeons performed the six-hour surgery on Jonathan whose condition led to obstruction of blood flow. He was hospitalised when he developed breathing problems two weeks after birth. He lost one-tenth of his weight in three weeks and was on ventilator support with slim chances of survival without surgery. His parents’ determination to go ahead with the surgery motivated doctors to take up the challenge.

Sex racket

Panaji (PTI): Goa police have identified a Nagpur-based youth in an international sex racket, involving an Uzbek woman, busted here, the police said on Thursday.

NRI strangled

Durban (PTI): A 76-year-old man of Indian origin was strangled to death in his house in South Africa. Narainsamy Naicker was alone in his home when he was overpowered and strangled by a burglar on Wednesday, his family said.

Visa acquittal

New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court has acquitted two alleged impostors nearly 14 years after their arrest because an embassy official failed to appear and depose. They attempted to get Japanese visas with forged documents. The accused were charged with cheating, impersonation and attempt to get visas under fake identities.

Fatal fall

Shajapur (PTI): A woman was killed in Madhya Pradesh after she fell off a two-wheeler while talking on her mobile phone, police said on Wednesday. She had been on her way to her grandfather’s funeral.

Shroff case

Kochi (PTI): Actor Jackie Shroff has filed a petition in Kerala High Court seeking to quash a cheque bouncing case pending against him in a lower court. Shroff alleged the complainant wanted to create media hype by making him visit Kerala as an accused and tarnish his image.
