Palette power
Orange boosts creativity

Ever wondered why sometimes the most beautiful rooms, the softest couches, the fluffy pillows fail to give us comfort? Is it just our inability to adjust to a new place that keeps us awake at night in some hotel room? Why do our hearts suddenly race while walking down certain streets?

Such feelings of discomfort are not merely a matter of chance. At least not for Ajay Poddar, environics and colour therapy expert. Poddar’s new book, Empower Yourself: New Life Solutions for Health and Well-Being, discusses how this study can be put to use to improve life, as also the powers of symbols, ancient practices and chanting, which help the vibrating frequency of our cells.

At an interactive workshop at Starmark recently, Poddar discussed his book and his science. “We are not promising any magical remedies to problems. We are only working towards striking a balance between the various energies to create a more harmonious life. Our motto is to energise, enhance and excel,” says Poddar, a civil engineer from IIT Delhi.

“I had a manufacturing plant and the vastu experts told me it was all wrong and it wouldn’t work. I was challenged. I started studying the energies and rallied back. I have been working on this for close to 16 years now,” says Poddar with a smile.

Cacti should not be kept at home as they are non-life-giving plants

Environics

Simply put, environics is the science of assessing and aligning the energies of a space. “There are magnetic gridlines emanating from the magnetic core of the earth. They are about 200 times stronger than the intensity of the human energy. Earlier, when animals would graze on a plain, they would instinctively avoid the places with negative energies. They are more sensitive to the emanations. Old cities and towns too would be built accordingly,” explains Poddar. Other factors affect energy too, like if the house or office has been built on an underground spring.

l matter is made of positive and negative ions, so their energies may also have an adverse effect on human health, according to environics. “A sensitive person will know instinctively when he is in a negative-energy area. The heart beat and the pulse rate go up. One is irritable. In so many offices we have corrected the energy flow and found that productivity of employees has gone up because their health is better,” says Poddar.

Poddar uses a Lecher Antenna to fix a wavelength and measure the energy flow in an area and microchips, symbols and copper pieces to correct their flow.

Environics and vastu

“I find vastu, the way it is practised today, to be both frightening and frivolous,” feels Poddar, who also practises pranic healing and reiki. Many old vastu tenets are difficult to follow today, he says. “Ancient vastu says no to any drains inside the house, for it drains away energies. No toilets, kitchen and washing places would be inside the living area in old houses.” But he admits there are similarities between the old science and environics. “The old vastu experts would live in a site for six-eight months before they built a construction. They understood the energy flow. But there are almost no similarities with the way it is followed today,” he says.

Colour therapy

“Every colour has its association. It has energy,” says Poddar. He also uses colour therapy to harness and align the energies of a space. Different coloured spots or bindis stuck in different corners of the room can correct the energy flows of the area. It can be used for personal healing too.

“Most people are deficient in some colour which manifests in a sensitive body part. So if someone is deficient in green near the throat area, for example, he might suffer from sore throats and it can be corrected by wearing more of that colour,” explains the therapist.

Dos and Don’ts

There are few generalisations in environics and colour therapy as each individual space has to be felt and its energies measured to prescribe corrections. However, here are some common precautions:

Don’t use granite. It has negative energies and affects human health.
Don’t keep money plants at home. It affects the nervous system.
Don’t have cacti at home, either. They are considered non-life-giving plants.
Avoid sharp beams or edges. Energies can’t flow around them; they deposit on the those sitting or sleeping under a sharp beam.
Orange is a good colour for offices because it encourages creativity.
Lighter colours are better for homes, they give a sense of space and are also less gloomy.
