Alam smashes his way to victory

Jamshedpur, April 16: Eight shuttlers moved to the second round of Inter-School and Bustee School Badminton Tournament winning their respective matches at Mohan Ahuja Stadium on the inaugural day of the tourney .

In the mini boys’ singles, Aviral Alam of Church School defeated Mayur Vikral of DBMS in a one-sided match 21-5. Aviral made short work of his opponent and went on collecting points easily.

In the same category, Mobashir Rahman of DBMS defeated Ankur Guha of the same school in a keenly contested tie.

Rahman beat Ankur 22-20 as both the players were in the attacking mood till the last minute of the match.

Vejeet of Loyola School defeated Prateek Raj of DBMS by a convincing margin of 21-7 to make it to the next round. It was relatively easy for Vejeet to win the tie as his opponent tamely surrendered.

In the mini girls’ sing- les category, Manish Priya of Loyola School defeated Sneha Gupta of JH Tarapore 21-15.

Although Sneha put up some resistance in the initial stage of the match, she could not continue to keep up the good work till the end and was defeated by the Loyola student.

In the sub-junior girls’ singles section, A. Jyotika of St Mary’s School, Lopa Mudra of Loyola School, Revati Shaw of Sri Sakchi Gujarati English School and Deboshruti Biswas came out with brilliant performances to book their berth in the next round.

For Jyotika it was a cakewalk as she defeated her opponent Shikha Chowdhary of DBMS 21-1.

She did not give any chance to her opponent to revive from the initial onslaught. Rakhi Pal of Beldih Church was shown the door by Lopa Mudra of Loyala.

Revati played convincingly against Kanchan Pandey of Church School and defea- ted her (21-8). Initially Kanchan put up a good show displaying an array of backhand and forehand shots and winning points, but Revati proved too good for her and surged ahead with points to win the match.

The tournament would continue till April 18. Around 12 schools and 150 participants are taking part in it. Around 150 matches would be played in the three-day event.
