Court orders body swap cry probe

The chief judicial magistrate’s court in Alipore on Wednesday directed Jadavpur police station to probe the body swap allegation against MR Bangur Hospital and file a report by April 30. The family of 45-year-old Subrata Bhattacharya, who committed suicide at his Jadavpur home on Saturday, alleged that they had waited throughout Sunday but did not get the body. They were allegedly handed over the body of a different man the next day. The trader killed himself while wife Champa was at her parents’ with their five-year-old daughter.

Boy drowns in pond

The body of Ashish Pathak, 12, was found floating in a pond at Mirpara, Liluah, on Wednesday. Police said the boy, who could not swim, got into the pond with some neighbourhood boys around 11am. The body was sent for post-mortem and an unnatural death case started.

Pesticide death

Taku Manda, 20, a resident of Christopher Road, in Tangra, committed suicide late on Tuesday, police said. Taku consumed pesticide and was rushed to National Medical College and Hospital after his parents noticed him lying unconscious and frothing at the mouth. He died in the hospital.

Student suicide

Munmun Baidya, 16, a student of Class IX, committed suicide at her residence in Baruipur, on the southern fringes of the city, late on Tuesday. Police said she was suffering from depression. On Wednesday, she was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Tiffin box blast

Four teenaged ragpickers and a boy were injured when the tiffin box they were playing with exploded. The incident occurred around 12.45pm on Wednesday when the group, led by 19-year-old Mamoni Sardar, was sorting out discarded items they had collected from Basanti Colony, near Ultadanga Main Road.

Jewellery looted

A gang of thieves broke open the door of a jewellery shop, Sikdar Jewellery, at Birati, and stole ornaments and cash worth over Rs 20,000. Police registered a case of theft and detained a few local youths.

Corpse dumped

An unidentified body thrown off a vehicle on Wednesday afternoon on Jessore Road, near Madhyamgram, sparked off tension in the area. According to police, the body belongs to a youth who might have been killed at least 48 hours ago. There were deep cut marks in his throat, arms and legs.
