Mother drowns in attempt to save girl

Krishna Kundu, a 32-year-old homemaker, drowned in the Hooghly near Barrackpore on Monday morning while taking a dip in the river on the occasion of Poila Baisakh. rishna was accompanied by her 13-year-old daughter Seema. According to police, the teenager slipped and was borne away from the shore by the high tide. As the girl started screaming in neck-deep water, Krishna and some youths tried to reach her. While Seema was saved by the youths, Krishna drowned. Her body was fished out by the police divers.

Pedestrian hit by taxi

Ram Sagar Paswan, in his mid-30s, was seriously injured when a taxi hit him at the crossing of Rabindra Sarani and Numi Goswami Lane in the Jorabagan police station area early on Monday. He was taken to RG Kar Hospital, where he underwent surgery. The driver sped away.

Medical seats

A Medical Council of India (MCI) team has submitted a proposal to health minister Surjya Kanta Mishra to increase the number of postgraduate seats in medical colleges. The officials said the step would fulfil the need for teachers in medical colleges.

Flights added

SpiceJet announced new daily flights from Calcutta to Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati and Bangalore on Monday. The Bangalore flight will take off at 6.55pm, the Delhi flight at 9.50pm, the Guwahati one at 12.35pm, Hyderabad at 8.15pm and Mumbai at 8.10am.

Women doctors

The state government has decided to appoint three women doctors on contract for the recently set up Alipore jail for women. A senior jail official said over 240 women inmates were shifted to the new jail from Presidency jail. Jail sources said the inmates have been demanding women doctors.

Rail passengers

South Eastern Railway has recorded a nearly four per cent increase in the passenger count in 2007-08 compared with the previous year. An official said the railway carried 185.7 million passengers in 2007-08 compared with 178.9 million passengers the previous year.
