Trader shot dead in daylight

Behrampore, April 13: A medicine dealer was shot dead in his shop by three youths this morning in a bustling market in Behrampore.

Thirty-year-old Srijan Mondal died in his chair in the shop at Naturbazar.

Sujay Brahma, 24, an employee, is in Behrampore New General Hospital with splinter injuries received when the youths threw a bomb before firing at Srijan at point-blank range.

Deputy superintendent of police Shanta Kumar Mitra said Srijan was an activist of the Democratic Youth Federation of India.

According to police, the three came to the shop around 11am.

Sujay said the youths, “in full pants and T-shirts” first asked Srijan if he was Trafi — he was known in the locality by that name. “The moment he nodded from his chair, one youth threw a bomb. While I slumped to the ground, Srijanbabu put his head down, blood oozing.” The youth then fired at him.

The three had fled by the time people reached the spot on hearing the blast.

No one has been arrested. “We are yet to get any clue. We are looking at all angles, including business rivalry,” a police officer said.
