Three injured in twin blasts

Alipurduar, April 11: Three persons were injured when two bombs exploded in quick succession near the Alipurduar Junction station this evening.

The first explosion took place around 7.30, opposite side of a petrol pump, located at a stone’s throw from the divisional railway manager’s office.

Papai Bhowmik (22), who works at a weigh bridge, was hit on his throat by splinters. Doctors at the Alipurduar hospital, where he was taken, failed to stop the bleeding and have referred him to Siliguri.

Two minutes later, the other blast occurred near Damanpur Hat, 500m from the site of the first explosion. Raju Chhetry and Sujit Das, both aged between 20 and 22, were injured.

“I was going to the DRM chowpathi. I saw a black smoke and after that I fell on the road.” said Chhetry. Splinters hit him on his back and left elbow. He was shifted to the Alipurduar hospital. Das was injured on his left hand.

A team led by additional superintendent of police here Sabyosachi Raman Mishra reached the spot. “The explosions were not very powerful and I think they were locally made. We have started investigation and will bring a dog squad tomorrow. It is too early to suspect anybody,” Mishra said. Saikat Banerjee, a resident of the area, said he saw two trucks cross the area just before the blasts.
