Host team retains title

Jamshedpur, April 11: Tata Steel retained the All India Inter-Steel Plant Athletics Championship title by garnering 172 points, as the meet concluded at JRD Tata Sports Complex today.

Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO, Burnpur) clinched the runners-up slot with 86 points in its kitty. Rourkela Steel Plant finished third with 69 points.

Rajendra Toppo of Rourkela Steel Plant emerged the fastest athlete of the championship, bagging the 100m crown.

Toppo crossed the fin- ishing line in 10.8 seconds, edging out IISCO’s Umesh Das (11 seconds) and Tata Steel’s Prakash Hansda, who also clocked the same time.

Host team’s Anil Kumar clinched the 3000m steeplechase crown clocking 10.07.2 seconds even as Sanjeeb Kumar Minz of Rourkela finished second (10.15.3 seconds).

IISCO’s Shazada Alam managed the third slot for himself with a timing of 10.18.3 second.

The steel major also topped in the shotput event with Rahul Kumar hurling the iron ball to a distance of 13.95m.

Kumar edged out Vizag Steel Plant’s M. Ganesh Babu, whose covered distance was 12.97m and R.K. Pandey of Tata Steel, who managed a throw of 12.90m.

IISCO’s Susen Roy, who leapt 14.23m, bagged the triple-jump title. Sree Jay Kumar and S.K. Bobanga, both belonging to the home team, managed 13.65m and 12.82m, respectively.

Bhilai Steel Plant stamped its authority in the 4x400m relay, finishing the race with a timing of 3.31.4 seconds.

Rourkela Steel Plant bagged the second slot in the category with 3.31.4 seconds while the host Tata Steel finished third with a timing of 3:32.00 seconds.

Yesterday the steel major bagged two gold, two silver and three bronze in 1500m sprint, pole-vault, hammer throw and 4x100m relay race.

The steel major was also the all round winner of the All India Inter-steel Plant Athletics Championship held in Rourkela last year.
