Special vigil on VIP Road
More than 100 trucks and buses were booked on VIP Road on Friday on charges of rash driving. Ninety-one cases were registered in three hours and Rs 2.5 lakh was collected as fine, said Supratim Sarkar, the superintendent of police of North 24-Parganas. Jaywalkers were taken to the local traffic guard and advised to follow road rules.
Classes resume: Classes resumed at the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute on Friday after a nine-day deadlock caused by Citu. A team of security guards of GD Security Company, which took over from Star Security and Detective Agency on Thursday, also joined duty. “Things are back to normal. We started classes today and there has been no trouble,” said Sudin Banerjee, the administrative head of the institute.
Homemaker dies of burns: Wahida Begum, 32, died after reportedly setting herself on fire at her Tiljala home late on Thursday. The homemaker was admitted to National Medical College and Hospital, where she died on Friday morning. Police said she had been suffering from a psychological disorder following the death of her daughter. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Godown gutted: A coconut oil godown was gutted in a fire in Beleghata on Friday evening. Four tenders were sent to the spot. Officials said a short-circuit at an electric post near the godown had caused the blaze. There was no injury or casualty.
Injured in clash: Two persons were injured in a clash between two gangs in Ekbalpore on Thursday night. The groups hurled bombs at each other. Police said the injured had a criminal record and were arrested. A preliminary probe revealed that the clash broke out over the control of an extortion racket. |
