Guwahati, April 8: Jolted by the All Assam Students Union (AASU)-triggered furore over the distribution of alleged sub-standard furniture to model schools in the state, Dispur today asked the inspector of schools to submit a detailed report by April 20.
AASU had alleged that sub-standard furniture was supplied to 53 of the 219 model schools. The decision was taken at a high-level review of all education schemes.
An education department official said if the reports are true, then the supplier, Assam Small Scale Industrial Development Corporation, is likely to be blacklisted and action taken against the principals.
The department has decided to distribute free bicycles to 1,02,915 girl students of Classes VIII and IX and free umbrellas to 76,000 primary school students in May. The department will give give Rs 5 lakh to provincialised schools to construct new buildings and Rs 5 lakh to upgrade provincialised college libraries.
Another source said that block education officers have been asked to submit reports on the construction of kitchens under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.
