Jaigaon, April 6: Parents of an alleged dowry death victim on Friday night withdrew the fast after the Jalpaiguri district police chief assured them that the deceased’s mother-in-law would be arrested.
But even though 48 hours have passed since the parents called off the fast, the accused woman is still at large.
Arpita, the only daughter of Shankar Saha Roy of Dhupguri, had been married to Sital Dey of Telipara in January last year. Roy had also paid Rs 1.75 lakh as dowry. Two months after the wedding, the in-laws started torturing Arpita, demanding Rs 60, 000 more.
Although Roy paid Dey’s family Rs 10,000, that did not bring to an end the mental and physical torture meted out to his daughter.
On March 10 this year, a neighbour of the Deys rang up Roy to say that his daughter was not well and admitted to Birpara hospital.
But when the girl’s father reached the hospital, he found her dead. “I gathered from the neighbours that my daughter had been throttled to death and then hung from the ceiling to make it a look like a suicide,” Roy said.
Although the police arrested Dey and his father on the basis of Roy’s complaint, mother was yet to be nabbed. District superintendent of police S. Tripurari said efforts were being made to arrest her.
