Day II Highlights

On 245 South Africa bettered their previous best score in the single Test match they have played on this ground. In November 1996 SA scored 244 versus India and also lost the Test by 64 runs.

When he was on 63 Jacques Kallis overtook Gary Kirsten to become the South African with most runs on Indian soil. Kallis has now scored 541 runs in 6 games at an average of 67.62 while Kirsten had 471 runs in 5 Tests at an average of 52.33.

When he went past 144, AB De Villiers broke the record of the highest score by a No. 6 batsman for South Africa in all Tests. The previous highest score by a South African No. 6 was Colin Bland’s 144 not out vs England in 1964-65 at the Wanderers.

Kallis has scored the 30th Test hundred of his career and second vs India. He went past Sir Don Bradman’s 29 centuries.

On 121 Kallis bettered his previous highest score made on Indian soil which was 121 in Kolkata in 2004-05. Interestingly both his centuries against India have been scored in India.

South Africa’s lead of 418 is now the biggest they have taken in all matches in the subcontinent.
