Accused, NIT pupil defends himself

Jamshedpur, April 2: One of the students accused in the violence case that erupted on NIT campus on Sunday morning has come forward to record a counter statement before the police 72 hours after the incident.

In the fight that broke out on the NIT campus on Sunday, third-year students beat up final-year students following a clash over personal reasons. Some students were injured and final-year student Kamal Kishore was rushed to Tata Main Hospital at 3am on Monday.

Reacting to charges made by Kamal on Monday against four third-year students, one of the accused, Abhishek Vatsa, recorded his statement before a sub-inspector of Sakchi police station, saying that he had been attacked and admitted to MGM Medical College and Hospital on Sunday.

Abhishek has charged a group of seniors including Kamal Kishore, Ranjan Goswami, Ramesh Chandra Majhi and Subodh Subhash Besra for beating him up on that day.

He accused his seniors of misbehaving with him on Saturday night under the effect of alcohol after which he was forced to take shelter at his friend Amit Mishra’s place in Jugsalai on the insistence of another classmate Saroj Ram.

“The statement reveals that Abhishek went back to the hostel on Sunday morning when the warden asked both the parties to vacate their respective rooms following the incident,” said Shailendra Kumar Pandey, the sub-inspector at Sakchi jail who recorded Abhishek’s statement on intimation by MGM Hospital autho- rities yesterday at 10pm.

However, insiders said Abhishek, who was reportedly hurt in the stomach and chin, got himself admitted to MGM Hospital just to file a counter case in his favour.

“His case gets stronger if such a case was filed. He was released from the hospital at 11pm yesterday just after recording his statement,” a source alleged.

The case would now be forwarded to the Adityapur police station under whose purview falls NIT.

Meanwhile, the teachers’ strike reached no breakthrough even today.

“We are continuing with our resolution to stay away from teaching in classrooms. We want a transparency in the entire functioning of the administration,” said M.K. Agarwal, the president of NIT Teachers’ Association.
