Mason killed in building cave-in
Mason Bara Bhai, 30, was killed and two others were injured when a portion of a building in Thakurpukur’s Bhattacharya Para collapsed on Wednesday evening. Police said the cave-in occurred while the masons, engaged to demolish the building, were taking a bath. Hearing the thud, neighbours rushed across to rescue the men. Saddam Sheikh and Rabiul Islam were extricated from the debris and removed to Vidyasagar Hospital in a critical condition.
Car crushes man’s feet
Mohammad Khurshid, alias Pappu, 35, was injured after a car ran over his feet on Sudder Street around 8.30pm on Wednesday. The wife of a lieutenant-colonel was driving the car. Bystanders and shopkeepers surrounded the vehicle and started heckling her, until personnel from New Market police station arrived and dispersed the mob. Khurshid was treated at SSKM Hospital and discharged.
Run over by bus
A pedestrian, aged about 30 years, was knocked down by a private bus on route 205 on Lenin Sarani around 5.25pm on Wednesday. He was rushed to NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. A police sergeant chased the bus on his motorcycle and intercepted it in the Ballygunge area. The driver was arrested and the bus impounded.
Knocked down
Ratan Kumar Roy, 61, a resident of Baranagar, was injured after a private bus (WB 04C 659), on route 34, knocked him down on APC Road, near Khanna cinema, on Wednesday. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was treated and discharged. The driver of the bus was arrested and the vehicle impounded.
Throat slit
Hira Baidya, 32, was found dead at Purandarpur, Baruipur, on the city’s southern fringes, on Wednesday. Police said her throat had been slit with a sharp weapon. She had been murdered elsewhere and her body was dumped there. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
