Class boycott over result row

Siliguri, April 1: Students of North Bengal University’s BBA and BCA courses have decided to boycott classes till April 20 to protest against poor results in first, third and fifth semester exams.

The varsity, too, has suspended all classes, including BBA and BCA, held at the Information Technology Centre “until further notice” citing a breakdown in the law and order situation on the campus.

Yesterday, the varsity authorities had promised to re-evaluate the answer scripts of those who had failed after students vandalised the campus as soon as the results were published. The registrar had said the revised results would be published by April 20.

The students today said they would allow classes only if the marks were increased substantially after re-assessment.

“It is a case of the university being miserly with marks,” a student representative said. “The varsity is treating BBA and BCA like conventional courses, setting 20-mark questions that are not suited to technical and professional courses.”

“How is it possible that more than 90 per cent of the students in our class failed? Even those who managed to pass did not scored more than 50 per cent,” a BBA student said.

“Elsewhere, students of professional and technical courses score 60-80 per cent,” said a girl student of BBA. “If they adopt such marking patterns, we will not even be eligible for CAT, which requires 50 per cent in graduation.”

Registrar Dilip Kumar Sarkar said the students should trust the authorities, “when we have promised them that a separate set of examiners will re-evaluate the answer-scripts of all candidates who have failed the exams”. This includes all colleges under the varsity where BBA and BCA are taught.
