Head hostage

Tamluk, April 1: A primary school headmaster in Contai was locked up in his office for six hours today by guardians who accused him of being irregular.

Bishnupada Bera was also charged with coming drunk to Hamir Mohan Kalikabar School, about 170km from Calcutta. The subdivisional officer said Bera was set free only after police promised to probe the charges against him.

Cops hit bike

Calcutta: A police van hit a motorcycle in Kalighat on Tuesday night, injuring Arnab Banerjee, 31. The Dhakuria resident was admitted to SSKM Hospital with a fractured leg.

Village light

Calcutta: Power minister Mrinal Banerjee on Tuesday said extensive work to complete rural electrification under the Rajiv Gandhi Vidyutikaran Yojana will begin from November. Tenders will be floated this month and the job will be completed by 2012.
