Houses set ablaze by Heirok mob

Imphal, March 27: A mob in Heirok today set ablaze houses of three youths suspected to have been involved in the killing of three persons on Monday, despite the Peoples Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak) claiming responsibility for the incident and tendering an apology last night.

Not satisfied with the militant outfit’s explanation, hundreds of residents gathered this morning and attacked houses of the three youths, Thokchom Maipaksana, Moirangthem Itaoba and Thokchom Sunil Deol, suspecting them to be accomplices in the incident. Two of the three suspects fled before the mob attacked their houses, while police arrested the third, Maipaksana, yesterday.

“The mob stormed the houses around 10am, brought out all household articles onto the courtyards, demolished the houses and then set them on fire,” an eyewitness said.

In a statement issued last night, the secretary in-charge of the department of publicity and propaganda of Prepak, Aheiba Angom, said the firing took place when its members were trying to capture Th. Romesh Singh, who was “working against” the outfit.

The outfit promised to help the bereaved families.

The president of the joint action committee of Heirok, Kh. Ibomcha Singh, said the villagers refused to accept the explanation and apology.
