Free trips for AIDS, cancer patients

Transport minister Subhas Chakraborty on Thursday announced in the Assembly that the government would allow free travel to cancer and AIDS patients, alone or with an escort, on state buses. Chakraborty said such patients could travel free for treatment or periodic check-ups on production of the necessary medical certificate. The facility will come into effect from April 14. The decision followed repeated representations received from various organisations. Till now, physically challenged persons of certain categories were allowed free travel.

Blast injures kids, uncle

Three people were injured when a bomb exploded in a scrap godown in Lichubagan, in Metiabruz, on Thursday afternoon. Among the injured were Akhtar Ali, 3, and sister Shiny, 8. The third was identified as their maternal uncle Sheikh Salauddin, alias Kallu, 24. All three are in SSKM Hospital in a critical condition.

Water plant

Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar on Thursday inaugurated an arsenic-free water plant at Joka, in Thakurpukur, in the presence of public health engineering department minister Goutam Deb. According to a department official, the project, built at a cost of Rs 21 crore, will benefit nearly a lakh residents of the area.

Taxi recovered

Two men were arrested on the EM Bypass, in East Jadavpur, late on Wednesday after they tried to hijack a taxi. Police said five persons boarded the taxi near Science City and forced the driver to get off. As soon as the men drove off, the driver went to East Jadavpur police station and reported the incident. A police patrol party set off in chase and intercepted the taxi near Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. Three members of the gang fled. The vehicle was recovered.

Dies in fall

A 22-year-old labourer, Prasenjit Samanta, died in a fall from a building under construction at New Town on Wednesday night. Police said Samanta, who was from Midnapore, slipped from the scaffolding.

Body in pond

The body of a middle-aged man was found floating in a pond near tank No. 2 at New Town on Thursday morning. Though police are yet to identify the body, they said the man may have slipped and drowned.
