Legacy through the lens
Sowing valuable seeds of tradition in a non-traditional world, Jyoti Bhatt is a photographer who has made it his life’s vocation to visually record our country’s rich but often neglected heritage through his lens. The ongoing exhibition of his photographs, taken between 1959 and 1994, exemplifies his contribution in this regard. A painter and print-maker in his own right, Bhatt records village customs, rituals, arts and traditions with great understanding and aesthetic sensibility. For him, his work is a labour of love. Using carefully selected resources, he has portrayed a picture of both urban and rural India with discernment, insight and objectivity.
