Tight security shield

Dhanbad, March 24: Campaigning over, election officers of the district administration have moved towards Chirkunda to conduct free and fair civic body elections amid tight security.

Briefing about the security and poll arrangements here, the deputy commissioner (DC) of Dhanbad, Ajay Kumar Singh, and superintendent of police Shital Oraon said the situation in Chirkunda was under control and security had been beefed up in the area ahead of the polls.

Considering the fact that Chirkunda is located on the Jharkhand — Bengal border, poll observers expect the situation to be volatile there.

Oraon, however, said the situation was under control and no extra forces had been sought from Bengal.

“We have not felt the need of extra personnel. We have deputed our present forces at places and have set up checkpoints for constant monitoring,” the SP said.

The borders have been sealed to check the movement of unauthorised persons, the SP said. Five checkpoints have been set up and each one of them has been put under a police officer and a section of armed forces, the SP added.
