Schoolgirl dies in truck hit

Pal has been admitted to SSKM Hospital and the truck driver arrested.

Rabin was taking Ishita, a resident of Kedar Bhattacharya Lane, to Surendranath Girls’ High School, Santragachhi, for her examination.

A witness said: “Rabin took a right turn from Drainage Canal Road towards Santragachhi. The truck, approaching at a high speed from the left, hit the motorcycle. The riders were flung off the two-wheeler. Ishita was dragged a few feet by the vehicle.

Pedestrians rushed to the spot and sent Ishita and Rabin to SSKM Hospital, where the girl was declared dead on arrival. “The girl had died in the impact. She was bleeding profusely and was not breathing,” said a pedestrian.

“My elder daughter rang me up to say that Ishita and Rabin were injured in an accident,” said Ishita’s father, Asit Sett, a Calcutta Municipal Corporation employee.

Cyclist killed: Tapas Das, 35, was killed near Howrah’s Ghoshpara, on Mahendra Bhattacharjee Road, after a vehicle carrying Mother Dairy milk packets hit the cycle Das was riding at 12.30pm on Monday.

Das was returning from work when the mishap occurred. Bystanders damaged the vehicle and blocked the road for more than an hour, demanding “adequate compensation” for Das’s kin. The blockade was lifted after police intervened.
