Hosts bag twin golds on Day 1

Guwahati, March 23: Mamoni Deka and S. Daimari bagged a gold each for hosts Assam on the first day of the three-day 29th National Masters Athletics Championship that got under way at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium here today.

Deka bagged the gold in the women’s above-40 years javelin, with a throw of 23.48 metres while the silver was clinched by another Assam athlete, Rupashree Chetia, with a throw of 22.35 metres. Pusph Kaur of Haryana bagged the bronze with a throw of 21.48 metres.

Daimari won the gold in women’s above-45 javelin with a 26.28 metres throw, while another Assam athlete Rebati Phukan won the bronze in the event with a throw of 21.89 metres. S. Mejhan of Bengal won the silver with a throw of 22.7 metre.

In the men’s above-45 javelin, T. Baruah and K. Missong bagged a silver and bronze respectively for Assam. Baruah threw 46.58 metres and Missong threw 44.76 metres. N. Singh of Punjab threw 48.22 metres to win the gold.

N. Phukan bagged a bronze for Assam in men’s above-35 javelin with a throw of 41.08 metres. S. Singh of Madhya Pradesh and R. Kumar of Haryana bagged the gold (49.45 m) and silver (43.82 m) respectively.

Uday Sing Brahma bagged a silver for Assam in the men’s 5,000-metre walk in the above-75 years’ event with a timing of 37:57.87 minutes. Panchu Gopal Ghosh of West Bengal clocked 37:03.77 minutes and N.R. Shankar Rao of Karnataka clocked 38:12.27 minutes for the gold and bronze respectively.

Altogether 2,433 athletes above the age of 35 years are representing 24 states in the event.
