Cry over catchment area work

Gangtok, March 20: The Affected Citizens of Teesta (ACT) has opposed the proposed catchment area treatment (CAT) at Khangchendzonga National Park where the 300mw Panan hydroelectric project is coming up.

Himagiri Hydro Energy Private Limited is developing the project on 4,005 hectares of the park in East and North districts of Sikkim.

The CAT comprising replanting of trees and checking riverbank erosion and landslides aims to minimise the damage to be caused by the Panan project. But the ACT claimed that the work was a “disguise” for protecting the reservoir of the hydel plant Had it been for the benefit of the park, forest funds would have been used, the ACT said.
