Flier sent back for misconduct
A Bangladeshi holding a British passport was sent back to Dhaka from Calcutta after he allegedly misbehaved with a CISF officer on Thursday. T. Rashid had arrived from Bangladesh and was scheduled to take Air India’s Calcutta-London flight. An official said Rashid misbehaved with the CISF man after being asked to take off his shoes for security check.
Storm hits train service
The suburban train services on both Sealdah and Howrah divisions were affected between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Thursday because of disruption in power supply caused by a storm. The Howrah Rajdhani and Sealdah Rajdhani were delayed by over an hour, officials said.
raffic on BT Road was obstructed after a lamp post and a few trees were uprooted in the storm. Police said traffic on the stretch was slowed to a crawl for half an hour.
Factory fire
A fire broke out in a plastic factory in Chitpur Ghat Lane around 7.40am on Thursday. Three tenders brought the blaze under control by 8.20am. No one was injured. Firemen said a short-circuit might have caused the blaze.
Woman injured
Mahamaya Pal, 60, a resident of Amdanga, was injured after she fell off a private bus near Munshi Bazar, on Beleghata Main Road, around 8.35am on Thursday. She was taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital. The bus (WB 15-608), plying between Alam Bazar and Duttafulia, was impounded and the driver arrested.
Dead on road
Adhir Mondal, 38, a resident of a slum on Alipore Road, was found lying unconscious on a pavement near his shanty around 9am on Thursday. Police took him to SSKM Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. “Mondal was an alcoholic,” said an officer.
Slum funds
Rajasthan-based Shree Cement has contributed Rs 20 lakh to the Mayor’s Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers rendered homeless by the fire in Tiljala on March 10. The managing director of the company, H.M. Bangur, also the president of Rajasthan Foundation, handed over the cheque to Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya at the civic headquarters on Thursday.Thumbs Up
