Boys fall off roof, die

Two boys were killed on Monday afternoon after they fell off the roof of a three-storeyed building at Ramnagar, in the Garden Reach area. The duo — Mohammad Nadim, 18, and Mohammad Chand, 17 — were flying a kite.

Bus casualty

Aloke Chakrabarty, 50, was crushed under the wheels of a bus on route 44 on Monday night. Chakrabarty, a resident of Baguiati, was trying to get off the bus at the Mahatma Gandhi Road-Rabindra Sarani crossing when he slipped off the footboard and was run over by the rear wheels of the vehicle. The driver was arrested and the bus seized.

Riz case hearing

The Rizwanur Rahman death case came up for final hearing before Justice Dipankar Dutta on Tuesday. State advocate-general Balai Ray made his submission. He will also appear on Thursday.

Mrinal Sen surgery

Film director Mrinal Sen, who was admitted in Calcutta Medical Research Institute on Sunday, underwent a minor surgery in his right leg on Monday. Doctors said his condition was stable. He was suffering from cellulitis (inflammation of tissue caused by bacterial infection).

Ansari aides

Aftab Ansari’s six associates, awarded capital punishment by a city court, has written to Chief Justice S.S. Nijjar of the high court alleging that the Presidency jail authorities had violated a Supreme Court ruling by keeping them in cells for condemned prisoners. hey have requested Justice Nijjar to ask the jail authorities to shift them to ordinary cells till their appeal is heard by the high court. The six have been convicted for attacking American Center along with Ansari.

Bronze busts

Bronze busts of former deputy commissioner of police (port) Vinod Mehta and constable Moqtar Ali, who were trapped and murdered in a lane in the port area on March 18, 1984, were installed on Tuesday at the office of the deputy commissioner (port), in Garden Reach.

Murder arrests

Sleuths from Cossipore police station on Tuesday arrested three more persons, including Sayeed and Raja from Rajarhat and Bally, respectively, in connection with the murder of Citu leader Hare Krishna Gupta. upta was murdered in January while he was playing badminton with his friends off his Gopal Chatterjee Road residence. A gang of youths trooped down to the field and opened fire from point-blank range. Two youths had been arrested earlier in this connection.
