Manipur boys charm selectors

Imphal, March 14: Five under-13 rugby players from Manipur are likely to book berths in the Indian team for the Monsoon Rugby Festival to be held in the United Kingdom in May.

This was stated by Indian Rugby Football Union development officer Sanjay Gupta. He is scouting for talent from the state for the under-13 team since March 8.

Currently, trials are under way at the Manipur University hockey complex at Canchipur.

Gupta said around 10 boys would be taken to Calcutta to join the coaching camp, where a maximum of five boys will be selected.

The development officer added that to develop the game in Manipur, Welsh-born Paul Hutchin, director of Future Hope Rugby Development Cell, will come to Imphal to assess the grassroots condition and help out with equipment and necessary gear.

In India, there are at least 25 to 30 rugby clubs and only a 20 or so experienced coaches. Despite the lack of experienced coaches in Manipur, players here have shown zeal and promise.
