English, found in translation
The department of English, Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat, is organising a two-day symposium on Translation and the English Language, with Special Reference to Translators’ Work in Northeast India on March 23.
Sponsored by the Sahitya Akademi, the symposium will bring together some of the most renowned names associated with the theory and practice of translation in the Northeast. It will take up issues related to the translation of texts from English to the regional languages and vice-versa.
Eminent scholars and academicians, including Kobin Phukan and Madan Mohan Sarma, writers Arup K. Dutta and Imran Hussain, and young translators like Santanu Phukan and Mitali Goswami will participate in the symposium. Two academic sessions, on translation theory and practice respectively, will take place on the second day.
The representatives of the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, including deputy director Geetanjali Chatterji, will also attend the symposium. Besides the translation of fiction, poetry and writings in English and Assamese, specific contexts like translating from other regional languages like Bengali and Nepali will be discussed by the scholars, including Imran Hussain and Geeta Upadhyaya.
Science day
National Science Day was observed at Dhubri Jatiya Bidyalaya, College Road under the Dhubri Rural Science Society (DRSS), a science-based organisation of the district on National Science Day. The DRSS organised art and quiz competitions for the students. Art competition was held among students of Class V to VII. The quiz competition was held among the students of Classes VIII to X.
The DRSS president, Debendra Nath Sarmah, headed the meeting and the secretary of the organisation Ahmed Hussain also spoke on the occasion. Lecturer of B.N. College Nripendra Nath Das and Bhuban Saikia, a retired lecturer of the same college, participated in the meeting as guests.
Kids excel
The 103rd Foundation Day celebrations of Rotary Club of Dhubri saw art and elocution competitions at the local Hari Sabha auditorium. Students from various schools participated.
In the elocution competition, the topic — Peace and Goodwill — attracted many students to the dais. It was followed by an open meeting and prize distribution ceremony. S.P. English Medium High School, Dhubri, emerged champions and Bethel Baptist Mission School, Dhubri was the runner-up in the elocution competition.
Niladri Chaki, Ankita Ghosh and Debadrita Ghosh secured first, second and third positions in the art competition in Group-A while Jaswajit Chakraborty, Anirban Kundu and Nitish Kumar Ghosh bagged the top three slots in Group-B. Nabonita Ganguly was awarded a consolation prize.
